A healthy and balanced lunchbox is essential for a growing child’s daily nutritional requirements. Research carried out by the Foods Standards Agency indicates that many children who take lunch to school are eating too much saturated fat, salt and sugar in one meal.

The annual Taste of Grampian food festival, now in its 18th year, implemented the school lunchbox creation competition to complement the Curriculum of Excellence and the (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007 and to involve local children and young people in the festivities.

This year’s challenge is for school children, in teams of four, to create a nutritionally-balanced lunch (with a budget of £2.50) using locally-sourced produce.

Teams wishing to take part must register by Friday 31st March 2017 and written proposals must be submitted by Friday 19th May 2017. Entries will be judged live at the Taste of Grampian food festival at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Saturday 3rd June 2017.

We hope your school and pupils will participate in this engaging and educational competition, which will culminate in a fun-filled day at Thainstone with lots of prizes on offer for originality, product knowledge and design.
