At Food Standards Scotland (FSS), our primary concern is consumer protection. We are here to make sure that food is safe to eat, ensuring consumers know what they are eating and improving nutrition.
Food Standards Scotland was established by the Food (Scotland) Act 2015 as a non-ministerial office, so we are part of the Scottish Administration alongside, but separate from, the Scottish Government. We commenced officially on 1 April 2015 as the new public sector food body for Scotland.
Our vision is ‘to create a food and drink environment in Scotland that benefits, protects and is trusted by consumers.’ FSS’s work is an integral part of helping Scotland become a healthier, more successful nation. The Scottish food and drink industry is a hugely successful sector, making a significant contribution to Scotland’s economy, and with a strong reputation at home and abroad. FSS has an important role to play in sustaining this reputation, ensuring that consumers both in Scotland and beyond have confidence that food and drink produced here is safe and authentic.
